August 27, 2008

now I'm excited with a touch of freaked out.

So today was awesome. The professors are awesome and hilarious and they all bicker about whose field is better and such. Highlights from day one of class:
  • Leaving Moorea with less students is bad
  • If we see some whales in the lagoon we will just grab a boat and go swim with them...apparently this is a regular/almost daily activity (and yes you should be jealous)
  • Brent Mishler, a professor, does not approve of cheap hand lenses
  • Some of us may have to have beach bungalows with outdoor kitchens and literally be feet away from the water
  • Peanut butter is expensive in Moorea, but the pineapple is the best ever
  • Emphasis on how Moorea is quite literally in the middle of the pacific.
  • The class motto is be flexible
This is going to be amazing.

I leave in 15 Days...

Soooo, I am going to attempt to be hip and blog about my trip to Moorea. Honestly though I am not sure I am tech-saavy enough or maybe it is just a cool factor I lack...just a warning.

So here is the run-down on IB 158...The class starts in Berkeley, in about 6 hours (I just can't sleep) for two weeks and then we are all off to Moorea, officially until the 14th of November. I will be staying with Yoko until the 19th in French Polynesia and then we are jettin' off to Australia for a week and I will be back for my meatless thanksgiving.
Then we're back to berk for a couple of weeks for finishing our papers and doing presentations on Dec. 11, final drafts due the 15th and I will have completed my last fall semester at Berkeley (on top of the leaving the country thing I am freaking out about graduating too...).

We have a Field Trip to Bodega Bay the 5th-7th and the email sent about it put me at ease a bit, here's a snipet:

Bring a backpack, water, sweater for cold nights, flashlight for night work with bugs that George will show you, and a change of clothes in case you fall in the water chasing the bugs. You should have all your science gear as well--hand lens, GPS, binoculars, a few ziploc bags to collect goodies in, notebook, pencils, cameras, photo scale, etc. You may get muddy too.

I am in bio-geek heaven and am going to be for the rest of the year.

So there is the plan, now all that's left is livin' it and hopefully successfully tellin' you all about it...we shall see how this goes.

ahhhh I am leaving in 15 days!
